Treaties and Pacts

By Sejal Mathur

Ever since 2001, the Institute has signed up many MOUs with prestigious institutions in and outside India for overall welfare and benefit to the student society. Amongst those, in the recent past, COEP signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 23rd May, 2013 with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to support the design, development and launch of a student developed satellite.
Another was a formal MOU with Raj Metallurgical services in Pune itself, signed up on Friday 7th June 2013 at COEP. Under the terms of this MoU, both the parties took on to offer aids such as training, B. Tech/ M. Tech Projects, research projects to COEP Metallurgy students and faculty, developing contact with overseas universities for faculty and student exchange programs, organizing & hosting joint academic and cultural symposia, conferences, seminars, providing consultancy services etc. On the same day, an MOU with Ecosan Service Foundation (ESF) was also signed wherein a grant of 90 lakh INR was to be received by COEP for an Indo European Collaborative Research Protect titled “Natural Water Systems and Treatment Technologies”.
On the 12th of June ’13, an understanding with Duale Hochschule Baden Wuerttemberg was signed for exchange of faculty members regarding lecture, joint research and sharing of experience, exchange of publications in fields of both universities and exchange of students for study abroad, internship and participation in education programs. Also, a memorandum was signed with National University of Singapore on 25th June, ’13 to identify opportunities for academic faculty/student exchange and joint research and development in the discipline of mutual interest.
With the aid of these memorandums, COEP has another helping hand to making its ventures a great success!

Much Ado About Placements

By Sejal Mathur

This year, much unlike preceding years, COEP witnessed the incoming of a staggering 111 companies at its campus. Firms like Google and two other Japanese organisations posed lucrative offers as high as 40 lakhs for the candidates with D.E.Shaw having selected two students for a package of Rs.16.3 lakhs.
Amid the Undergraduate section, a significant 76 out of 83 students got selected from Computer Department equaling a total of 91%. The second on the list stood ENTC Department, having 69 out of a total of 83 pupils getting placed, accounting for 81% placement. Next was IT Department, with 52 from 69 getting selected i.e.75% followed by Mechanical Department holding 68% placement statistics. Ensuing on the list were Civil and Instrumentation branches, both totaling to 67% selection of students. Subsequently, Metallurgy Department held 61% placements this time around with Electrical and Production branches corresponding to 59 and 56% respectively.
On the whole, a sizeable 477 number of students out of total 674 students from the UG section have succeeded at the placement scenario summing up to 71% placements. Despite the evident placement gloom having led to a noticeable slump in recruitments this year, COEP has stood its stance fairly well.

NES Innovation Awards

By Sejal Mathur

The Natarajan Education Society (NES), established by Dr Ganesh Natarajan, works in the domains of education and employability to ensure that the youth of India are equipped with necessary skills to make their mark in a changing world. It works towards aiding young and innovative students to dream of and conceptualise new products and services to solve real problems of society and make a mark in their domain.

NES had organised a Panel Discussion on ‘Enhancing Quality in Higher Education’ on March 23, 2013 at Mini Auditorium of Academic Complex, COEP. The Chief Guest for the function was the well-known luminary Padmabhushan Dr. A.R.Mashelkar. Amongst the other eminent panellists present were IT professionals and industrialists, alongwith our own Director Sir, Dr.A.D.Sahasrabuddhe. Mr.Mashelkar devised his own equation E=F, that is, Education=Future and that the there is no bright future without a good base of education. He also stressed upon the idea that ‘Innovation is no option-‘tis the only way!’ No wonder his words have impressed the crowd at large.

The panel discussion was followed by the award ceremony for the top ten winners. The first position went to a team of three from Sandeep Foundations Nasik, who developed coding for a Fall Detection System that alerted the relatives of the Old-aged person in case of occurrence of any fall or injury. The other runner-up teams were felicitated by Dr.A.R Mashelkar with a certificate and a book written by him.

The programme gave an insight into how intelligent minds have helped draw practical solutions to day-to-day difficulties. Indeed, a great occasion for all the faculty members and students of COEP getting to hear and interact with such talked-of personalities.

COEP SAT team redefines sky’s limits, yet again!

20th March was a milestone day for the COEP Satellite team with a very important review of the project which is being worked upon since a long time, at ISRO Satellite center (ISAC). A team of 19 students of 5 different subsystems presented the progressreport of COEP’s ingenious satellite 1U standard satellite, SWAYAM, with dimensions 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm and weight around 1000 gm in front of a panel comprising of eminent scientists including Mr. Annadurai, Director of Chandrayan-1 and Mr. Raghavmurthy, Director of the Small Satellite Program.

Scientist at ISAC were very impressed and appreciated the maturity in the work shown by the team. SWAYAM will be the only satellite in India which will be stabilized in a passive way by using only a pair of hysteresis rod and a magnet. The panel analyzed the study done by the team for passive Attitude control and stabilization and asserted that a formal MoU would be signe within a few days.

Utilizing the facilities at ISAC, the team has built a bread board model to the scale. The Structure subsystem of COEP SAT team will soon be visiting Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) Thiruvananthapuram for satellite and launch vehicle interface.

COEP repeats history at SAE-BAJA 2013

COEP has been an indispensable participant of SAE-BAJA since its inception in 2007. More than 150 colleges including IITs/ NITs participated in the event this year. The event comprised of designing, fabricating, assembling and running an all-terrain four wheeler vehicle on a specially prepared torturous track near Indore. COEP has bagged the 1st prize in ‘Best Built Quality’, ‘CAE Design’ and also in ‘Best Acceleration’ thus positioning it as the leading car in the race. Moreover COEP received accolades in ‘RAFTAR’, for the fastest lap during the race along with in ‘Endurance Test’ which was the real race on a rough track. The team received the biggest cash prize ever of 8.5 lacs for this emphatic feat.

COEP infrastructure raises its heights

The firm, CCBA, designed the academic complex and the girls’ hostel. Photographs of the model buildings were obtained by Sejal Mathur.

Above is the model of the girls’ hostel building. The Academic Complex model is as displayed below. The tanks at the back side of the academic complex are proposed to work in the next ten years for water purification purposes, especially during REGATTA.

COEP goes international-YET AGAIN

Yet again, COEP has brought accolades to the college having left another mark on the international stage by securing an overall 6th position at the South Africa BAJA World Championships scheduled for the 19th and 20th of October. Day one saw the able team clear the Technical Inspection in first attempt, making them the first Indian team to ever do so in the 17 previous years of the event. Moreover, they secured an overall 2nd position in the top speed category and were the first team to successfully clear the brake test. The vehicle performed exceptionally at the manoeuvrability and at the hill climb, securing 2nd and 5th positions respectively. At the end of day one, they stood at fourth position, a mere 20 points behind the team in first. Nearly all of the judges voiced that for the first time in history, they could see potential that a team from India may win the competition this time around. Our college team was the most mentioned name out of the commentary box as they were the fastest on track. Furthermore, every other team used anywhere between 3 and 8 drivers for the race; COEP’s was the sole team to drive the entire race on one driver. This was the first point mentioned during the presentation before the awards were given out. Almost every person present at the event congratulated the team saying they had never seen a team perform as brilliant ever before. It was a moment of immense pride and respect for the team members and certainly is, for rest of the COEPians too!
