Efest Enchants Emerging Entrepreneurs

25th March ‘13
Naina AKA Shreya

After about 2 years the Entrepreneurship Cell-‘Empressario’ was back into action with its annual ‘E-Fest’ conducted over the weekend. This year, the fest was open to technical and non technical colleges all over Pune. The E-Fest has always satisfied the creative and entrepreneurial appetite of students since its inception. Under its umbrella 2 new events were launched-Bid Master and Quizonomics . Quizonomics was nothing close to a normal quiz. The concept of risk taking, winning and losing the money-they had it all. The teams had their highs and lows but enjoyed the overall experience. Bid-Master proved to be a huge crowd puller with amazing response from the hostel students. Planning, strategy and impulsive decision making had the viewers and the participants’ adrenaline pumping. Another event which is the most favourite among budding entrepreneurs –‘Business Baazigar’ saw some innovative ideas on the block. The effort put in by all the teams was commendable. ”Even though we didn’t win the competition, we felt like real entrepreneurs today . And the best part is, we get to keep our profits!” said Aditya a First Year participant.

ICICI Trinity

ICICI Trinity is an initiative by the ICICI Bank-one of the leading banks in India, that promotes and furthers the cause of innovation and entrepreneurship amongst the youth community of India. A programme regarding the same was organised at the Mini Auditorium of our college on the 21st of March ’13. From amongst 30 top engineering institutes listed on specific criterions, ten were selected by ICICI including COEP, VJTI, IIITH, IITD, DTU, PEC etc.

The programme provides a unique opportunity to the students to become entrepreneurs at bank’s cost with zero investment. It consists of three stages- Ideate, Prototype and Be an Entrepreneur. It seeks to identify ideas, evaluate, groom, nurture and help the ideas turn into successful ventures. Also, the programme provides opportunity to meet, interact and learn from industry veterans which in itself is a rewarding and enriching experience.

Undeniably, it was not only fortunate for COEP to get listed midst the other topmost colleges in India but a one-of-its-kind chance for the COEPians to get such a platform to become budding entrepreneurs at such a preliminary stage.

COEP and ISRO – hand in hand

It was a proud moment for COEP when Dr. Vedachalam, director of ISRO arrived in Pune from Piruanantapuram, at 1pm on 10 October. Despite a long journey, Dr. Vedachalam carried his enthusiasm to the college for his scheduled meet with our faculty and students.

First of all, Dr. Vedachalam was greeted by our director, Dr. Anil Sahasrabudhe. Later on, Rahul Kulkarni, project manager of COEP Satellite team, showed him the satellite tracking system at ground station of COEP Satellite project located on the terrace of Metallurgy Department. The ground station was assembled a few days back and as a result, COEP is now able to track any LEP satellite going over the campus.

Next followed a visit to the FABLAB where a demo of all working subsystems of CSAT was displayed. He appreciated the work done by our students. After the brief demo, COEP Satellite team presented their detailed work and progress towards satellite making project. This session lasted for more than 5 hours and comprised of a discussion between Dr. Vedachalam and our SAT team expert students, leaving sir impressed. SAT team also submitted documents for conceptual and preliminary design review to Dr. Raghavmurthy, chairman small satellite program at ISRO. The SAT team is expecting their response soon.

On 11th October, Dr. Vedachalam delivered two lectures for all COEPians. First lecture on the topic of ‘Space Transportation for National Development’ started at 9.30am with a huge response from faculty and students from all years. Dr. Vedachalam elaborated on evolution of space technology in India, specifically in ISRO and on various missions planned ahead. He recited a story of how Chandrayan-I proposal was put forward by ISRO which unfortunately got rejected by Wajpeyi, Prime Minister of India at the time. A.P.J later suggested them to launch probe to moon carrying Indian tricolour and dramatically, Wajpeyi announced it with the slogan ‘Hum Jayenge Chandrayaan-I’ on 15th August. COEPians enjoyed Dr. Vedachalam’s talk as it was not on entertaining, but also informative. Dr. Vedachalam concluded the first lecture by briefing about ISRO’s proposed mission to Mars which is only possible at two specific times in coming decade 2013 and 2017.

Unknown albudo values of the moon caused the failure of Chandrayaan-I. He discussed many more issues relating to consistent trial and error strategies. His visit intended supporting and appreciating the COEP Satellite team and encouraged our COEPians for research in space technology.

Engineering Innovations

Edited from The Times of India , 17th September ’12

Orignal Reporter : Kanchan Gogate (ToI)

Engineer’s Day- September 15 – is a mark of respect to Late Sir M Visvesvaraya , an alumnus of College of Engineering, Pune , Asia’s 3rd oldest Institute . On this occasion, Dr. Anil Sahasrabuddhe, COEP Director professes the need for having engineers with sound basics, as technology is becoming an integral part of modern life .

Taking engineering beyond profession and turning it into an outlook , Bharat Ratna Visvesvaraya , Divan of Mysore , was an internationally recognized figure . He had a lion’s share in harnessing water resources and designing and constructing dams , bridges and irrigation systems across the country . The country needs more engineers like Visvesvaraya , agrees Dr. Anil Saharabuddhe .As seats in many engineering colleges remain vacant , he believes a rational estimate of the requirement is needed .

“After independence, there were a handful of government Engineering Colleges. Increasing requirement gave rise to more colleges. With private colleges making inroads, supply became more than demand. The exponential growth has reached a saturation point. All we need is right evaluation”

However, he underlines the fact that engineers are still required. “Not that demand for engineers has dipped. Modern life revolves around technology, an application of engineering. Earlier mechanical, electrical and civil were considered core disciplines. Today Electronics, IT and Biotechnology have developed. Engineers with higher skill sets are needed. Not many seem to taking metallurgy today but it is an important discipline today.”

About the current scenario, he opines there’s an immense scope to increase employability of engineers if along with engineering education certain soft skills are also imparted.
