Established in 1854, College of Engineering Pune (COEP) has a glorious history of excellence in engineering education. COEP has witnessed many notable alumni like, Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvaraya, Prof. Thomas Kailath and Dr. C.K.N. Patel (both decorated with coveted IEEE Medal of Honor) and scores of others. COEP was granted autonomy in the year 2003. The Department of Computer Engineering and Information Technology, established in 1992, offers two undergraduate programmes, namely, B.Tech (Computer Engineering) and B.Tech (Information Technology), and a post graduate programme M.Tech (Computer Engineering).The department is a recognized research center under Savitribai Phule Pune University for the Ph. D. (Computer Engineering) programme. The faculty of the department is actively engaged in research in the areas of Cloud Computing, Information Security, Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Data Analytics, Bio-informatics, Networking, Green Computing, Signal Processing, Multimedia and Embedded Systems. Information and Cyber Security Research Group (COEP - ICSRG) is formed by the volunteers to do novel research in area of "Information and Cyber Security" in COEP and other Institutes. The group members acquire knowledge in current state of art systems and develop systems using open source softwares or freewares. Keeping in view the pervasive nature and impact of cyber security on all walks of life - economic and social, Government of India has identified Information Security as one of the major thrust area for launching various development programs. One of the key elements essential for information security is availability of right kind of qualified and well trained human resources, who could take up Research & Development (R&D), develop indigenous solutions / software, secure and maintain various systems including critical infrastructure. Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology ( MeitY) has approved a project in 2005 entitled Information Security Education and Awareness (ISEA) which was completed in 2014 and Phase II of the said Project was approved in April 2014 with an outlay of Rs. 96.08 crore for a period of 5 years.
