Dr Ramkrishna Suryawanshi   IES(1981)

  • Dr R K Suryawanshi presently Emeritus Professor  at COEP Pune, involved in Post Graduate Teaching , Research and Consultancy in water and environment sector.
  • .Dr. Suryawanshi  is IES (1981) joined Central Water Engineering Services  through UPSC.
  • He obtained his Ph.D in Flood Management from IIT Bombay. He is graduate in Civil Engg from IIT (Kanpur) and Postgraduate in Hydrology from IIT, Roorkee. He is also a Law graduate from University of Pune. 
  • He is a Fellow of Institution of Engineers, Life Member of Indian Water Resource Society (IWRS), Indian Society of Hydraulics (ISH), & Indian Society of Geomatics (ISG). He is Convener of IWRS, Pune and Ex Chairman of ISG, Pune.
  •  He is Ex Chief Engineer, Central Water Commission, (Narmada-Tapi Basin) Min of Water Resources, Govt of India, Gandhi Nagar (Gujarat) looking after  development of water information system, flood management and physical & financial monitoring of major projects in Narmada & Tapi basins as well as all west flowing rivers in Rajasthan, Gujrat, Maharashtra, and union territories of Daman & Div including the canal works of Sardar Sarovar Project . He has successfully monitored & guided the flood management activities during the peak flood events of 2012 & 2013 in the region especially for Surat and Bharuch towns which are chronically flood prone.
  • Dr Suryawanshi was   Member (Environment , Rehabilitation & Resettlement), Narmada Control Authority, Indore looking after Environmental as well as R & R issues for various water resources  projects in Narmada basin including the Sardar Sarovar Project.
  • Being Member Secretary of the  Environment  and R & R Subgroup  he played crucial role in restarting the construction works of the Sardar Sarovar Dam in June 2014 by completeting the Environmental and R&R requirements as per  Hon. Supreme Court  directives.as the work  was held up for several years.
  • Earlier he was Dy Secretary, Sardar Sarovar Construction Adv.Com,(SSCAC) MOWR, Govt Of India, at Vadodara monitoring the  construction as well as financial & inter state aspects of the Sardar Sarovar Project.
  • In Ministry of Water Resources , he initially joined as Asst Director  worked in Remote Sensing Dte of Central Water Commission and later was associated with Ganga and Brahmaputra basin planning studies
  • As Deputy Director he has carried out hydrological appraisal studies (i e water availability, design flood etc) for several water resources projects in the country. for techno-economic sanction of the Planning commission..
  • As Executive Engineer, he contributed in establishment of Hydrological Information System (HIS) in Upper Krishna Basin and west flowing rivers in Maharashtra. He also carried out physical & financial monitoring of number of water resources projects in the region.
  • As Director at CWC(HQ), New Delhi, he has dealt with issues on dam instrumentation / dam safety aspects. He has also worked as Head of Subject Matter Division, MoWR, for implementation of R&D projects in water sector.
  • He is one of the founder Directors of the National Water Academy, Khadakwasla Pune. He had been associated with the development of the academy right from its inception in 1998 till 2010. He has initiated, designed and conducted many new training courses related to application ofmodern technologies in water sector in addition to his contribution in development of  new training infrastructure in the Academy.
  • As a core faculty at National Water Academy Pune, Dr Suryawanshi has dealt with the subjects of Basin Planning, Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), Remote Sensing –GIS Applications, Environmental and R&R issues, Operation Hydrology, Project Hydrology, Disaster / Flood Management, Dam Safety, Geotechnical/ Hydrological Instrumentation, R & D In Water Sector etc. delivering over 500 lectures to water professionals.in the country.
  • In order to enhance the applications of the Geoinformatics technology, Dr Suryawanshi established “Centre for Geoinformatics” at National Water Academy,(NWA) Pune under NNRMS(GoI Program) in collaboration with ISRO(HQ), Bangalore. The centre has the state of the art training infrastructure equipped with latest hardware and requisite softwares. He designed training modules for Govt officers, academicians which include fundamentals of geoinformatics, use of softwares and applications in water sector. He has conducted over 20 training courses for Govt officers, academic faculty, research scholars from the entire country contributing over 1200 man- weeks of training on geoinformatics in water sector.
  • He also designed special training module on RS-GIS applications in water sector for the officers of Central Water Engineering Services during their Induction Training Program (ITP) at NWA, Pune. Over the years about 100 officers have got the benefit of this module.
  • He conducted special training programs on RS-GIS for State Govts of West Bengal, Tamilnadu, and Maharashtra at their locations. He assisted the states, central institutes as well as academic institutions in establishing their Geomatics labs.
  • In order to propagate the subject in the student community, Dr. Suryawanshi has guided several UG/PG projects in water sector using Geoinformatics. Being a member of Board of Studies he contributed in development of academics curriculum for geoinformatics and introducing the subject at UG level in Unv of Pune as well as SNDT Unv Mumbai. He has been associated with the Geoinformatics courses conducted at University of Pune, Sinhgad College of Science, Symbiosis Institute of Geoinformatics etc. since their inception.
  • As a part of innovative applications of the geoinformatics technology in hydrology, Dr Suryawanshi has introduced concepts of digital rainfall, digital runoff as well as digital flood routing and demonstrated their applications in flood management .This innovative model has achieved him Ph.D. from IIT Bombay
  • Dr. Suryawanshi has compiled and edited over 20 training volumes on the subject of Geoinformatics in water sector. He has contributed over thirty research papers on water related subjects which have been published in national & international journals.
  • He has also designed and implemented new training modules on “Hydological Design Aids “useful for Project hydrology/ Operation hydrology applications including softwares like SWDES,HYMOS during implementation of World Bank aided Hydrology Project –I & II,
  • He has designed & conducted eleven training courses on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) for river basins using RIBASIM software & contributing over 700 man weeks of training on the subject. He has contributed in three special river basin studies( Upper Godavary, Sabarmati, Vatrak) on IWRM using RIBASM software for State Govt.s of Gujarat,& Maharashtra under HP-I.
  •  He has guided over 13 M.Tech dessertations and 10  B Tech Projects. He has been visiting faculty on water related topics at several reputed institutions through out the country which include Unv. of Pune, Unv of Mumbai, SNDT Unv., Symbiosis Unv., CSWCRTI Ootty, WRD Chennai, WRD Kolkatta, WAPCOS New Delhi, Irrigation Dept, Jaipur, GSDA, YASHADA, Pune, WALMI Aurangabad, WALMI Anand, WREMI, Vadodara etc.
  • In order to generate collective opinion on various crucial issues in water sector, he organized five National Workshops/Conferences on select  following themes.He edited the proceedings of these  National Workshops in which the recommendations emerged were compiled and included which  have been subsequently helpful to many central & state agencies in policy formulation and decision making  ih these fields..

  • As a part of mass awareness program of Govt of India in water sector , he  organized over 15 Water Resources Day functions at various places  in Maharashtra.
  • One of the important aspects in water sector is water education to media professionals. Dr Suryawanshi designed and implemented six months MoWR- Media Fellowship program” in which several media personnel from prominent print /visual media were trained & guided for balanced reporting on water sector for the first time in the country during the “Fresh Water Year-2003”.
  • Upon the request received from Indian Navy to train its officers in water sector, Dr Suryawanshi designed & conducted unique training course especially for senior officers of the Indian Navy for the first time in the country.
  • He has presented research papers on flood management at “14 th World Lake Conference” at Austin (USA) as well as “Water & Society-2011” conference at Las Vegas (USA). He was one of the members of Govt of India Study Team on IWRM which visited Taiwan during which he presented a paper at the International conference on “IWRM-Training in India”.
  • In recognition of his contribution in water sector, he was awarded “Raobahadur N S Joshi Irrigation Engineer Award -2005” by Institution of Engineers (India),Pune.He was given “Er. S G Shirke Award” for the Best Project Guide by IWRS-Pune. He was also awarded “Khandesh Bhushan” by the Khandesh Mandal, Pune
  •  During his academic career , he is NCC C-Cetificate holder and also obtained French and German language  Certificates. He received High School scholarship and National Merit Scholarship of Govt of India .
